BBC Introducing: Martin Bowie at Tregenna Castle

Jazz musician Martin Bowie has just released a new album, which he is about to take on tour throughout Cornwall and further afield.

The project called Azure Thing is a mixture of written music by Martin Bowie, and improvisation from Martin and his band.

"It's kind of the modern jazz sound that has been around since the '60s. I like to think this is very easy to listen too, but there is a lot of improvisation too.

"You have a set of chords that the melody works with and then we go from there."

Martin Bowie popped in to BBC Radio Cornwall studios to talk about the new album on the David White Show, where he premiered the title track, Azure Thing.

Martin himself begins the tune process by guitar, before he involves other musicians later in the process.

"It's all done on guitar. I often start with the melody. It grows from there. Some start with a chord progression and then go to the melody. But it's the other way round for me.

"With 'Azure Thing' I was looking out of the window on a beautiful summer's day. I was just staring into space and the first few notes fell under my fingers. The initial bit comes easily. Sometimes finishing can be hard. I sometimes have to leave them and come back later. It can be tricky."

You can see Martin Bowie each Sunday at 12.30pm with Ross Williams and Tim Greenhalgh at Tregenna Castle Hotel, St Ives.

More lovely comments from guests!

We are very grateful for these lovely comments from guests:

"My partner and I love this hotel so much, we've stayed there six times. It's set in lovely gardens and has an Edwardian charm all to itself. The rooms are always clean. The bathrooms are big and the beds comfortable. The staff are second to none and always happy to help. There's a varied selection of accommodation, with wood cabins and cottages within the grounds. We got a bargain last time and stayed in a wonderful cabin with views over the lawns. You can eat yourself silly in the breakfast room and again, the service here is top-notch. Value-wise, it's one of the best priced places to stay."

A view like no other

"I was so excited when I opened the door, the room was absolutely massive and the view was like no other! The staff again were absolutely lovely and breakfast was very good. We will definitely be coming back, and a weekend just didn't seem long enough!"

The wow factor

"This hotel has wow factor as soon as you drive into the grounds and alight in front of the castle-like building, grounds are lovely, immaculate and views over St.Ives, difficult to beat this."

Fab

"It's a great family hotel, that is clean and friendly. We loved the beautiful grounds and the walk to the beach. Fab."

Nowhere better

"All in all we loved our trip, the weather was glorious - the beaches were just beautiful and with the sun shining we could not have picked anywhere better.Would we stay again.....most certainly!!"

Congratulations to Terri from us all!

What a lovely story here describing Terri's wedding. After all the weddings she has planned for our guests, it's great to hear she had a perfect day herself.

New Savoir Faire at Tregenna Castle Hotel

Tregenna Castle Hotel has appointed a new Operations Manager, Ludovic Borghi.

Having grown up in France, Ludovic brings a wealth of five star experience to the St Ives hotel that ranges from winning national cocktail competitions to launching the first bar for over 100 years in London’s famous Claridges Hotel.

Ludovic developed the bar for the first five star hotel in Wales and he also was an important part of the team awarded 1 Michelin Star and the Leading Hotels of the World status for the Lygon Arms in Broadway, Worcestershire.

This latest recruitment is part of Tregenna Castle’s focus on offering the best food and drink in the area. The new imaginative menu is created from fresh ingredients that are locally and ethically sourced wherever possible.

Seafood takes centre stage and diners can enjoy the best of the local catch with stunning seaviews over the St Ives Bay. The new Operations Manager has also invited St Austell Brewery to supply all the beverages, Cornwall’s award winning independent family brewers established in 1851.

Ludovic is excited about this new opportunity:

“I am looking forward to running Tregenna’s restaurants and bars on a day to day basis as it is such a magnificent place. With these sea views, the castle and the grounds to enjoy it couldn’t be a more beautiful place to enjoy delicious local food and drink.”

Operations Director James Parker is pleased to have recruited Ludovic:

“Ludovic has outstanding bar and restaurant management experience that promises the best in food, drink and service to Tregenna Castle’s guests and visitors. Likewise, his involvement means excellent communication with our local fresh produce suppliers.”

Standing in a 72 acre estate, Tregenna Castle Hotel is well-loved for its far reaching sea views. Although frequently used by hotel guests, the restaurant is open to non-residents throughout the year.

Locals wishing to try Tregenna Castle’s restaurant can enjoy a three course Sunday lunch for £14.95 per head, accompanied by live jazz.
