Celebrations as nursery gains Outstanding Ofsted result!

Wednesday 18th November saw the Mayor of St Ives, Yvonne Watson, attending Castle Kids Nursery at Tregenna Castle for the official opening of the facility. The Mayor was also there to celebrate the result of the nursery’s recent Ofsted inspection. Inspectors visited Castle Kids in October to carry out the nursery’s first inspection and to the delight of the nursery’s management, staff, parents and children the report grades the nursery as “Outstanding.” Ofsted inspectors grade settings as outstanding, good, satisfactory or inadequate. Only the top 3% of settings in the country achieve an outstanding status.

Castle Kids becomes one of the first nurseries in Cornwall to achieve the outstanding status in every category under new inspection criteria, a tremendous achievement given that the nursery has been open for a mere four months.

Leah Care, manager of Castle Kids said: "We are all delighted and extremely proud of our achievements and the feedback we have received from Ofsted. This is all due to the hard work and dedication of the staff team and the contribution of the children and parents."

The report states: “The overall quality of the provision is Outstanding. Castle Kids provides excellent standards of care and education for all children attending. The manager is highly skilled and all staff are committed to the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage.” The full report can be viewed on the Ofsted website at www.ofsted.gov.uk

Castle Kids is the latest fully Ofsted registered day care facility to open in St Ives. The facility is designed to meet the needs of the hotel guests and local parents alike in providing flexible, affordable, high quality day care, offering children the chance to learn through play in a stimulating and nurturing environment. It also provides a facility for parents to get to know other people and new parents in the area and to drop in for advice and social opportunities.

The nursery conforms to the Early Years Foundation guidelines, but operates on a drop-in basis. This makes the nursery both very flexible and affordable as parents need not pay for sessions which are either cancelled or not attended due to sickness or holiday. Its also great for those needing an hour to themselves to go to the gym, get a hairdo or maybe just have some “me time”.

In addition to the extremely well equipped nursery, children attending Castle Kids also benefit from the supervised use of the two swimming pools on site, not to mention the sub-tropical gardens, adventure playground and vast open spaces the grounds provide. Ages catered for range from new born babies to children aged 10 and there are stimulating activities geared towards each age group.

Nursery prices are very reasonable too at just £3.50 per hour. Full morning sessions, full afternoon sessions and whole day sessions attract a further discount with an option for a hot or cold lunch for just £1.50.

Parents are encouraged to call in and see what the nursery has to offer and currently complimentary vouchers are available entitling you to one free hour at the nursery, for further information, contact Leah Care on 01736 791191.

CASTLE KIDS!

Castle Kids Club is open from the 18th of May

It’s our job to ensure that Castle Kids Club has something to engage all ages and all tastes, from babes in arms to the most independent of children, and we can assure you that there is always plenty to do and experience throughout each week, either in our playroom or activities around the hotel.

For our youngest clubbers, we know how important it is to provide them with a range of stimulating toys and exciting sensory experiences combined with affection and cuddles to keep them engaged and contented while parents relax. We also have a quiet area with cots for babies needing a nap.

We encourage our toddler clubbers to use their fantastic imaginations to take their play in whichever direction they choose, be that puppet making, pottery, cooking or studying the world around them. Our older clubbers may choose to involve themselves in our many outdoor sporting activities or may prefer to just chill out and relax, listening to music, playing the Nintendo Wii or getting involved with a photographic project or club production

Tregenna Castle in the snow and the wind.

Snow in Cornwall in February - it will probably rain frogs next week. Here is a video of the Castle in the snow, the wind was so strong that it blew some of the tables and chairs on the front lawn over.

Woodland Walk

The Woodland Walk has been brought back to life thanks to a lot of hard work by the Gardening team here at Tregenna. The Woodland Walk takes you through our 72 acre grounds. On the way you can see woodpeckers, rabbits, foxes, squirrels and badgers. The Estate is truly blessed with an abundance of wildlife.
The walk was originally created in the 1920s and has been painstakingly brought back to life by our dedicated grounds team. Cross the woodland valley by bridge and stroll down to St Ives past the waterfall with its stream side planting cascading down to the well where it disappears and makes its way to the stunning Porthminster Beach. You will see many interesting species of tree and plants on your way with colourful rhododendrons in abundance.
The grounds are open to visitors so if you want to take the walk just pop up to the Castle, maybe you'll fancy a cup of tea and a sandwich after and we have some of the best in St Ives - come and see for yourself.

Party!

It's the staff party this weekend and a chance to reward all of the hard work the team have done over the past year. Tickets are available from reception everyone can bring a guest; the do is at the rugby club. The tickets also come with four vouchers for drinks (booze tokens!). It should be a great night I'll be polishing my Cuban dancing shoes specially for the evening. So no excuses to not be there - it's a well deserved night off for the Castle and a small pat on the back for some big performances by the staff.

Happy Tigers.

Apparently it's not just the Snowy Owl who is enjoying the cold weather in Cornwall over the last few days. The Siberian Tigers at Dartmoor Zoological park are also rather pleased as covered by the BBC here. Whilst I'm very happy for the wildlife I'm also rather pleased that the weather should be returning to the usual mild Cornish winter over the weekend, my usually redundant ice scraper had to be found this morning and I'll be glad to make it redundant again soon...

Timber.

Anyone concerned locally about the felling of the trees on the estate alongside Trelyon Avenue should be reassured that this is part of an ongoing woodland management plan which will improve the Estates many acres of woodlands for many years. It is also the case that these particular trees were considered dangerous and must be removed by order of PDC.

The problem is created over a long period following these trees originally being planted too close together. This leads to tall and spindly trees with insufficient root balls to guarantee stability, particularly the case with Beech trees.

The sick Beech, Sycamore, and Turkey Oaks have been replaced by Oak, Sweet Chestnut, Beech, Larch trees and wild flowering Cherry which should ensure that the woodlands are vibrant and interesting to future generations of Guests and local people who enjoy the estate grounds.

Snowy Owl in Cornwall

Much excitement down the road in Zennor with the rare sighting of a snowy owl in the UK. The very beautiful bird is usually found in very cold countries like Russia so I wonder what it makes of the mild Cornish winter? The story even made the national press and you can read more in the Times.
